(Soundtrack for Windowsen FW21 Barbie with the Chinese Zodiac Collection)
Horror Pop Barbie
This is a collaborative project between RUI HO and the designer and founder, Sensen Li, of the Chinese fashion brand Windowsen. RUI HO made this set of music for Windowsen’s 2021 Fall/Winter Couture and ready to wear show, which has been a combination of fashion runway, Lip Sync, video installation and garment presentation continuing for over 40 minutes.
Easily came out as one of the most imaginative and memorable shows during the whole Shanghai fashion week this season, the whole show is filled with sounds that drives the inspirations from genres such as vogue house, techno, hardcore, deconstructed club and spoken words, etc. The soundtrack, accompanying the theme of the show: Barbie and the Chinese Zodiac, has used the samples of Aqua’s europop classic “Barbie Girl”, a lot of screaming and horrific laughters and one of the segment of Rupaul’s drag race’s recap on heavy autotune and distortion.
The effect of the soundtrack alone tells its own story in a way, from the very fancy and minimal ready to wear part, to the pushy and marching band vibe of the Barbie Girl edit, to the conceptual spoken words by RUI HO about alienated queer and trans identity connecting to Windowsen’s metaphoric theme of mutation and extraterrestrials. Then finally the heavy and decomposed 11-minute sound piece filled with smashing drums, pumping baselines, distortions and barbie girl and screaming samples.
The lingering feeling of horror keeping haunting the listeners echos the super sophisticated and out of this world design from Windowsen this season.
